Ali Mansuri
BIO

Ali is a London based award-winning producer whose shorts have screened at over 200 festivals worldwide including Berlinale, Tribeca, Palm Springs and BFI London Film Festival. A graduate of USC School of Cinematic Arts’ MFA in Film and Television Production, Ali initially worked in development before returning to the UK.

Ali recently produced the Film London funded short film Balcony, earning himself a British Independent Film Awards nomination and winning the Crystal Bear and Berlin Film Festival. He is currently developing and producing his first feature film by Screen Star of Tomorrow Toby Fell-Holden, and was selected as a UK Producer for the Berlinale Talent 2017.

His JBA provides support towards launching his film and TV company as well as developing his slate.

Andrea Luka Zimmerman
BIO

Andrea is a filmmaker, artist, and cultural activist who grew up on a council estate in Munich before moving to London in 1991 where she would later earn a PhD from Central Saint Martins.

Artangel Open winner, and the first director to be shortlisted for both the Grierson and Jarman Awards, Andrea has made three feature documentaries to-date. Estate, a Reverie (2015) tracks the passing of the Haggerston Estate in East London and the utopian promise of social housing it once offered, with a spirited celebration of extraordinary everyday humanity.

Andrea’s forthcoming documentary about iconic Vietnam veteran ‘Bo’ Gritz, Erase and Forget (2017), was shot over 10 years and had its world premiere at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival, and her JBA will support its distribution.

Annetta Laufer
BIO

Annetta Laufer is an award-winning filmmaker whose films have screens at festivals including Encounters, London Short Film Festival and The Harlem International Film Festival. Her short film Winnie and the Duppybat won Best Film and the BFM International Film Festival, and was subsequently purchased for broadcast by HBO.

In 2013 Annetta founded Roman Candle Productions to make films exploring the worlds of ethnic and cultural diversity. In February 2016 she was selected for Film London’s ‘London Calling Plus’ production scheme, through which she made the dystopian sci-fi short Afro Punk Girl.

Annetta’s JBA will provide support whilst she writes a feature script based on Afro Punk Girl.

Billy Lumby
BIO

Billy is an award-winning writer/director from London. His short film SAMUEL-613, made with Hackney’s Hasidic Jewish community, was nominated for a BAFTA in 2016. His previous film GOD VIEW was longlisted for a BAFTA in 2012 and broadcast in several countries by Canal+.

Billy has also participated on Guiding Lights, the UK film industry’s leading mentoring scheme, and was named as one of Screen International’s Stars Of Tomorrow in 2016. He is currently writing his debut feature and his JBA provides support towards his living costs.

Dean Loxton
BIO

Originally training as an actor at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Dean is a writer-director whose short films have screened at festivals all over the world including Palm Springs, Austin Film Festival, and London Short Film Festival.

His most recent short, Dániel, was nominated for an Iris Prize before being selected as one of BFI’s ’10 to try’ at the London Short Film Festival in 2016. Dean was recently chosen to attend the Berlinale Talent Campus, and was selected by BFI and BAFTA to participate in their FLARE mentorship programme where he received professional guidance from producer Iain Canning (Hunger, The King’s Speech, Shame)

Dean’s JBA will support research and an actors’ workshop in his home town of Nottingham as he develops his debut feature film.

Iesh Thapar
BIO

Iesh is a filmmaker and recent graduate of the world-renowned MFA Film program at Columbia University School of the Arts in New York.

Last winter, Iesh was awarded the EPSN/Tribeca Film Institute “Future Filmmaker Prize” for a short documentary he will be making in 2017 entitled, Glass Box Dreamer. He was also presented the 2016 ‘Sloan Production Grant’ for his graduation short TV In The Fish Tail, which was shot in the Indian Trans-Himalayas.

Iesh’s gritty London-based feature screenplay Alien Kulture was a second round consideration for the 2017 Sundance Screenwriters Lab, and he is twice recipient of the prestigious BAFTA LA Scholarship. His JBA will support final post-production and festival submission of his graduation film.

Jed Hart
BIO

Brighton based writer-director of shorts and music videos, Jed is interested in smart, visually striking genre filmmaking with a track-record of delivering high-quality authored films.

He has directed two short films for Creative England; Daddy’s Girl (2014) and Candy Floss (2016). Both shorts have played at festivals worldwide and received Staff Picks on Vimeo, with the latter being nominated for Best Short Film at BFI’s London Film Festival in 2016.

In 2016 Jed directed Night Cap, a horror short that was broadcast on Channel 4 as part of their ‘Fright Bites’ series. Jed’s JBA will support him to develop his first feature film.

Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor
BIO

Joy is a London-based producer with over seven years’ experience in creating films from shorts and features, to commercials and corporates. She is inspired by creating work that pushes boundaries and that shines a light on stories lesser seen.

In 2016 Joy was selected for BFI’s Flare Mentorship, through which she was guided by Ben Roberts, Head of the BFI’s Film Fund. Her recent feature film, White Colour Black, premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in 2016 and was shortlisted for the IWC Filmmakers Grant.

Joy has also participated in Birds Eye View Festival’s Filmonomics Plus scheme, in which her mentor was Stephen Kelliher, director of Bankside Films. Her JBA will support the development of her third feature film to be directed by Baff Akoto.

Lizzie Oxby
BIO

Lizzie is an award-winning filmmaker and graduate of London’s Royal College of Art. She specialises in films which blend live action with animation and has a love of creative, heightened, imaginative worlds.

Lizzie’s films have been screened worldwide at festivals including BFI London Film Festival, Clermont-Ferrand and Rotterdamn, and her work has been exhibited at major art institutes including The National Gallery, The ICA and The Royal Academy of Art.

In 2015, Lizzie received support from Northern Film Media for her debut feature film project in partnership with Women in Film and TV and Creative Skillset funded by the BFI. Alongside lecturing at Central Saint Martins and working for clients including EMI, Channel 4 and The Barbican, Lizzie is currently developing her feature for production with the support of her JBA.

Marie Tueje
BIO

Marie is a sound editor with a background in music composition and songwriting, who began her career in film and television after completing an MA in Sound Design at the University of York in 2012. Since then, Marie has been selected for the Sara Putt Trainee Scheme in 2014, and is currently a participant in the BAFTA Crew programme.

Marie’s feature film credits include: The President (dir. Mohsen Makhmalbaf), Le Ciel Flamand (dir. Peter Monsaert) and Renesse (dir. Willem Gerritsen), and her work on short films includes Ten Faces of Anna (dir. Laura Hypponen) and Sempiternal (dir. Frazer Ash).

Marie’s JBA will go towards an upgrade of her audio post-production editing suite.

Mathieu Karsenti
BIO

Mathieu is an award-winning music composer for film and TV with over 6 years’ commercial experience in the industry. He has composed and produced music for prime-time TV shows for BBC, CBBC BBC3, ITV1-2, Channel 4, SYFY, Bravo and Sky1 for top production companies, UK celebrities, and for independent filmmakers worldwide on award-winning shorts, features and documentaries.

His latest feature drama was premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and he kicked off 2017 scoring two short films for UK and US-based directors. Mathieu’s JBA provides support in re-recording some of his original film cues with a live string quartet and an accompanying video explaining his distinctive creative scoring process.
